- Come to the ITS Help Desk, to pick up a network cable. DO NOT bring your desktop or notebook computer with you. We will not be able to configure your computer while you wait, nor will it be accepted for a technician to work on.
- If you require a Network Interface Card (NIC) for your computer, you must obtain it and install it on your own.
- If you have followed the instructions and are still having problems, please call the Help Desk at 4444. Provide your contact information, including multiple phone numbers if possible. Also provide times during the week when you will be available for technicians from Information Services to come and test the connection.
- ITS technicians will meet with you at the agreed upon time and test the connection at your location.
- If the technicians are able to successfully connect from your location, they may conclude that the problem is due to a hardware or software problem with your computer. ITS will not repair your computer.
Acceptable use policies:
All students are subject to the policies of acceptable use which are outlined here:
Maintaining and repairing your own computer’s hardware, operating system, and software is your responsibility. Information Services can only provide and maintain the University-owned Internet infrastructure which provides the service to you (cables, infrastructure wiring, routers, switches, and access points.)
Physical connections:
Sharing your wired connection:
Some rooms have limited access to Ethernet jacks. Using a hub is an acceptable method of sharing this connection. However, routers and switches are not allowed. Please see this document:
Wireless connections:
Please see these documents for instructions on how to connect to the wireless network:
Network configuration:
You must have a properly configured network connection in your operating system. We will assume that you are using Windows XP for this document.
Check the IP configuration. Begin by clicking on the Start button, then Control Panel. Open the Network Connections folder.
Your Ethernet connection should appear as an icon labeled “Local Area Connection”. Double-click this icon to display the connection status.
Click on the Support tab. The Address Type should be “Assigned by DHCP”, and the IP Address should be a number like 10.xx.xx.xx where the xx can be any number between 0 and 255. If these settings are correct, your connection should be working properly and you can try to browse websites and otherwise connect to the Internet. If you still have problems, or if you see something else listed for Address Type and IP Address, continue with the troubleshooting steps in this document.
Click back to the General tab and click on the Properties button. Find the listing for Internet Protocol (TCP/IP). First make sure that there is a check in the box next to it. Then click once on Internet Protocol to select it and click the Properties button.
The configuration should be set for “Obtain an IP address automatically” and “Obtain DNS server address automatically”. If this is not what you see, make the appropriate selections and click OK.
At this point, you can click OK to any of the open properties windows. Then you should restart your computer and try your Internet connection again.
If your computer attempts to dial a connection, follow the instructions on this page.
