If you are using the Windows XP operating system, Windows can be configured to download security updates and patches automatically. The instructions below illustrate how to enable this feature.
- Open the System properties window. Right-click on the ‘My Computer’ icon and select properties, or enter the Control Panel and select the ‘System’ icon. You should see a window like the one pictured below.

- Click on the tab labeled ‘Automatic Updates’. Check the box that reads “Keep my computer up to date.” Under the Settings, please select “Automatically download the updates, and install them on the schedule that I specify.” Select “Every day” and choose a time of day that you will normally have your computer on. The computer needs to be on and connected to the Internet in order for automatic updates to occur. Use the screenshot below as a guideline. Click OK to save the settings.

- Windows will now periodically check for new updates.
