How to create a GroupWise rule to handle junk email / spam
January 4, 2007 2:18 pm | Author: Stephen McMillin | Filed Under Email-Faculty and Staff |

The instructions on this page will help you to create a rule designed to handle messages marked as “Spam”. These messages have been identified as “Spam” by our mail server, but they are still delivered to your mailbox. Sometimes a message may be incorrectly identified, and we want to allow you to see those messages as well. This rule will put all junk emails into a special folder so you can retrieve anything that was incorrectly identified.

  1. In order for this rule to work properly, you need to be using GroupWise version 6.5 or higher. To check your version of GroupWise, select the Help menu, then click About GroupWise to display the version number.
  2. Now the Junk Mail Handling feature needs to be enabled. Click on the Tools menu, then select Junk Mail Handling… On the Settings tab, check to “Enable Junk List” and check to “Automatically delete items”. Click OK. This creates the “Junk Mail” folder for your GroupWise account.
  3. Open GroupWise. Click on the Tools menu and select the Rules option.

  5. Name the Rule “Spam Mail”. Make sure the Received box is checked. Make sure the Mail box is checked under the Item types selection. Now click on the Define Conditions button.
  6. In the Define Conditions window, select Subject from the drop-down box on the left. Now type in “SPAM” without the quotes into the text box on the right. Click the OK button.

  8. In the Rules window, your new rule should now appear with a check mark next to its name (see the screenshot from Step 4.) Select the “Spam Mail” rule and click the Run button so the rule will take effect immediately. Click on the Close button to finish.
